European Net Neutrality
About 'Porn&Pwnage'
We are a small group of young filmmakers from Belgium, working on a no-budget movie called IP. We were pretty much wrapping up the pre-production when the whole Net Neutrality issue caught our eye, and after doing some research into it, we just felt we had to do whatever we could to help fight corporate takeover of the internet. So for the moment, movieLOL (which is the name of our movie production 'studio', even though we don't even have a studio) is focusing entirely on the Net Neutrality issue. Online we try to spread the word as much as we can and we make videoclips that touch upon the issue in a funny way to gain as much mainstream attention as possible. Offline we are working with Members of the European Parliament and making progress fast on the Net Neutrality issue in Europe, and we use movielol.org to keep the world up to date on that matter.
For now we want to keep most info on the movie under wraps until we actually have something to show. What we can say is that it is a non-profit project and we plan to release the movie in a very unique way; it'll be online, free and beyond Open-Source. And in regards to the style and content of it, well, we're big fans of movies like Lost in Translation, Le Fabuleux Destin d'Amélie Poulain, some of us really like movies like Donnie Darko and some of us are Kevin Smith fans. That's not to say that our movie will be like any of these but their influences will definitely be there.
Our team consists of 6 people, so to make a movie of this sort with such a small team is a pretty interesting challenge. But nonetheless, we try to put the bar high and we're making something that we ourselves would want to pay good money for to see it in theatres. Trailers will debut on movieLOL.org when we have them!
Thus far there has been no noticeable reaction as to how Net Neutrality is being threated in Europe. All of the groups that are currently fighting for Net Neutrality are based in the U.S., but if the big telephone companies have their way there, the impact on the rest of the world will be humongous, making it an issue that affects people worldwide.
Net Neutrality is at this moment very controversial. Those who are against it say that it's overblown and that there's not really a problem or that the cable companies should have every right to charge more for the high bandwidth usage of popular websites. Those who are for it claim that the internet freedom of speech is at stake, and that the downfall of Net Neutrality would lead to massive discrimination and censorship.
While there are interesting anti-Net Neutrality arguments that should definitely be discussed, we are certain that there must be better solutions than to violate internet freedom. Because sooner or later this will change our neutral internet drastically. Because when all the richest corporations and wealthiest political powers in the world can buy popularity on the net and surpress that of others, we do not believe that they will simply stand on the sideline and not use that newfound power to their own advantage.

Porn&Pwnage is the title of our series in which we document popular internet topics, trends or jokes. We want to show the world that almost all of this comes from regular internet users instead of coming in the form of a commercially injected hype. This is truly unique about the internet, it has its own rich 'cyberculture' that could be severely degraded if Net Neutrality would disappear.
